In 2011, we had a famous crash during the Double Century. One broken shoulder, two broken bikes and many broken bodies lay on the side of the road towards Montagu and our dreams were shattered at the same time. In 2012, we are taking a new approach and going in with a team of guys who have ridden together a few times before the actual ride. Last year we didn’t get one team ride in and this year, we have already put together 6 team rides to perfect any techniques that leave us on the low side of skill, being a bunch of triathletes and mountain bikers.
For me, the Double Century is a superb event. Combining strengths rather than saving for yourself, Double Century is about riding your own race while riding for others. If you get to 160km and you are still 12 together, that is considered the first win. The second win is getting to 160km in anything but tatters. It’s a big, long, heavy day out and there is no room in a team like ours for guys who do not contribute.
This weekend we will again attempt to cover the 202km as fast as humanly possible, while being mates, team mates and humans at the same time.
I will report back next week to let you know how it went.
